Block Print Bandanas
My first project among my students is going over quite well! Students are very receptive to working on multiple different surfaces and appreciate the more hands-on type of work that goes into printmaking.
This project was done with two studio art classes, grades 10-12 at the Brentwood High school
Creating this project was rooted primarily in creating an experience that students at any skill level can engage with. Those who were more interested in drawing were able to create prints that were more complicated as opposed to those who were not. Students with more of an interest in layout design and pattern making were able to create interesting designs using the blocks they had made and students who did not have a particular interest in art making period did still find the project engaging as I noticed many appreciating getting to create a piece they can wear themselves.
Sketch and Transfer
Students are given the opportunity to design an icon/logo, use a premade design or find their own design online. Once students have their designs they are instructed on how to transfer the icon onto their block by tracing it onto the linoleum tile
Carving and Cutting
Students are then instructed on proper carving techniques as well as provided fabric to cut with pinking shears
Printing
Students are then instructed on proper printing techniques, which then creative freedom over color and layout are put in their hands.
Students’ work is then put to dry and graded. All in all, students were very receptive to this project and appear to appreciate a different approach to their art projects.
